Nestled in the heart of New Brunswick, NJ, LA CABAÑITA offers an authentic Dominican dining experience that brings the vibrant flavors of the Caribbean straight to your plate. This cozy Dominican restaurant is a true gem for anyone craving hearty, flavorful comfort food, presented with warmth and genuine hospitality.
The star of LA CABAÑITA’s menu is undoubtedly their signature mofongos — a beloved Dominican staple made from fried green plantains mashed to perfection. Whether you opt for the Mofongo De Camarones (shrimp mofongo) with succulent, tender shrimp embracing every bite, or the Churrasco With Fried Yuca featuring a tender skirt steak alongside crispy, golden yuca, each dish bursts with rich textures and bold, layered Caribbean spices. For cheese lovers, the Mofongo De Queso offers a creamy, savory delight, while the Mofongo De Pollo and Mofongo De Chicharron invite you to indulge in well-seasoned chicken and mouthwatering pork chunks respectively.
The sides elevate the experience further with traditional favorites like perfectly sweet maduros (yellow fried plantains) and crispy tostones (green fried plantains). The fried yuca, delightfully crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, is a must-try accompaniment. The rice options showcase an array of Dominican classics such as Moro De Habichuelas (rice with red beans) and Moro Negro (rice with black beans), completing a meal that feels like a heartfelt home-cooked feast.
Walking into LA CABAÑITA feels less like visiting a restaurant and more like stepping into the home of a close Dominican family. The atmosphere hums with warmth and friendliness, echoed by the owner’s eager and welcoming presence. As customer Raysa Charles shares, “The food was delicious, services and the owner was very friendly,” capturing the genuine care and hospitable spirit that sets this spot apart.
Longtime patrons appreciate the approachable, quick-service setup where you can handpick your favorite dishes, making it perfect for a wholesome meal on your own time. Special K notes the charm of being able to simply order your favorite pick of starch—like their famed yuca topped with red onions—and always receiving friendly, patient service despite language barriers. This blend of convenience and authentic flavor makes LA CABAÑITA a beloved staple in New Brunswick’s culinary scene.
While the food consistently delights many, some guests have noted areas for improvement, particularly with attention to detail such as ensuring empanadas are free of bones, as pointed out by a reviewer. Nonetheless, the remarkable flavors and genuine ambiance largely overshadow these hiccups, inviting repeat visits and loyal fans.
In all, LA CABAÑITA offers much more than a meal — it delivers an immersive taste of Dominican culture wrapped in rich, satisfying dishes and heartfelt hospitality. Whether you’re new to Dominican cuisine or seeking a dependable place to indulge your cravings, this restaurant promises a dining experience that feels like a joyous celebration of food and community.

I had been coming since 2021 the food is delicious! I did notice the prices went up a bit, I like how you can come in and pick whatever you want to eat for a quick bite of hardy food. It's already made and they have my favorite all time starch Yuca w red onion! Sometimes I have to speak a little Spanish to tell them what I want but the cashier is very patient with me and nice. You ALWAYS get your money worth because they give you a lot of food. Update: They forgot my sides, they're normally good, Idk what happened but I ordered from DD.

The Chicharrón here is mouthwatering. I love the empanadas too. The only reason why I can't give this place 5 stars is because of the number of times I've found chicken bones in my empanadas. I've had to chew extremely slow while eating because of how dangerous eating them is. Tbh it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Word to the wise remove the chicken from the bones before shredding/chopping the meat. It's one thing with fish but this is the first place I've been to where I've had to worry about chicken bones.

I was really in the mood for some good Dominican food and stumbled across this place. Delicious. Good portions. I came back a second time and it didn’t disappoint.
